Where to Stay in Jacó, Costa Rica

Jacó is compact, but where you stay changes the trip.

You can stay close to the nightlife and walk everywhere, choose a quieter residential part of town while keeping restaurants and the beach nearby, move south toward serious surf, or stay around Herradura for a more resort-oriented experience.

The right answer depends less on finding the “best hotel” and more on deciding what you want to be able to walk to, how quiet you want the evenings to be, and whether you plan to have a car.

The Quick Answer

If you want...Look at...
Walk everywhere + nightlifeCentral Jacó
Walkability without staying in the middle of the busiest nightlifeBarrio Santa Lucía / Viva Jaco area
Serious surf + quieter eveningsPlaya Hermosa
Marina, resorts, golf and a more contained experienceHerradura / Los Sueños
No carCentral Jacó or another walkable part of town
Family convenienceQuieter parts of Jacó with groceries, beach and pools nearby

These are practical recommendations based on how the areas work, not a ranking of which place is universally “best.”

[MAP PLACEHOLDER: JACO AREAS]

  • Central Jacó
  • Barrio Santa Lucía / Viva Jaco
  • Playa Hermosa
  • Herradura / Los Sueños
Purpose: show the relative position of the main stay areas so the reader understands the tradeoff between central Jacó, quieter residential areas, surf-focused Playa Hermosa and resort-oriented Herradura.

Central Jacó

Best if you want to walk everywhere

Central Jacó gives you the easiest access to restaurants, bars, surf shops, supermarkets and the beach without relying much on transportation.

Avenida Pastor Díaz runs parallel to the beach and concentrates much of Jacó's commercial activity and nightlife. That makes the center extremely convenient, especially for a short trip.

The tradeoff is obvious: the closer you stay to the busiest nightlife blocks, the more noise and weekend activity you should expect.

Choose central Jacó if:

  • nightlife is part of the trip
  • you want restaurants within a few minutes
  • you don't want to rent a car
  • you want easy access to surf schools and the beach
  • you prefer activity over seclusion

Think twice if:

  • you're a light sleeper
  • you're specifically coming for quiet evenings
  • you want a secluded Costa Rica experience

Barrio Santa Lucía / Viva Jaco Area

Best if you want walkability with a more residential base

This is the tradeoff we personally prefer.

Viva Jaco is in Barrio Santa Lucía, close enough to walk to town, restaurants and everyday services without putting you directly in the middle of the densest nightlife area.

From our condo specifically, we normally walk to:

  • Jacó Beach
  • restaurants
  • bars
  • groceries
  • convenience store
  • pharmacy

For us, this is one of the strongest reasons to stay here.

You can spend the day at the beach, walk to dinner, and still come back to a residential condo building with pools, parking, security and more space than a hotel room.

Choose this area if:

  • you want to walk rather than drive
  • you want restaurants close by
  • you want a condo instead of a hotel
  • you're traveling with family or friends
  • you want a balance between town access and a residential base

Think twice if: You want total isolation or a jungle/beach retreat. This is still Jacó. You're choosing convenience over seclusion.

Playa Hermosa

Best for serious surfers and quieter evenings

Playa Hermosa is just south of Jacó and has a very different feel.

It is quieter and less commercially dense than central Jacó, and its surf is much more powerful.

Choose Playa Hermosa if:

  • surfing is one of the main reasons for the trip
  • you prefer a quieter environment
  • you don't need to walk to everything
  • you're comfortable driving or using transportation into Jacó

Think twice if: You want restaurants, supermarkets, bars and other daily conveniences immediately outside your door.

If you're a beginner surfer, don't assume Playa Hermosa and Jacó Beach are interchangeable. Hermosa is known for stronger surf and is better suited to experienced surfers.

Herradura / Los Sueños

Best for marina and resort-style trips

North of Jacó, Herradura and Los Sueños offer a different product again.

This is the area to consider if your trip revolves around:

  • sportfishing
  • marina access
  • golf
  • resort amenities
  • a more contained upscale environment

The tradeoff is that you're no longer choosing Jacó's walkable town experience.

If dinner, nightlife or daily exploration of Jacó matters to you, expect to drive or take transportation.

Choose Herradura if:

  • marina/sportfishing matters
  • you want a resort-style experience
  • you have a car or don't mind taxis
  • walkable Jacó nightlife isn't important

What if You're Traveling Without a Car?

Jacó is one of the easier beach towns in the area to use without one.

If you don't plan to rent a car, prioritize:

  1. walking distance to a supermarket
  2. beach access
  3. restaurants
  4. pharmacy
  5. the part of town you expect to use at night

Don't book solely based on “500 meters from the beach.”

A place can be close to the ocean while still making every meal and grocery run inconvenient.

Where Should Families Stay?

For families, we would optimize around convenience rather than nightlife.

  • two actual bedrooms
  • kitchen
  • washer/dryer
  • pools
  • supermarket nearby
  • beach access
  • parking
  • enough separation from the busiest nightlife blocks

That can mean a quieter part of Jacó rather than the exact center.

If you want a more contained resort environment, Herradura is another option.

Where Should You Stay if Nightlife Is the Priority?

Central Jacó.

Most of the nightlife is concentrated around Avenida Pastor Díaz and nearby blocks, making it easy to go out on foot.

Jacó's nightlife does have a harder-edged side as the night gets later, so decide whether that's actually what you want before choosing accommodation purely because it is beside the busiest bars.

If you want to go out but don't want the nightlife directly outside your bedroom, stay within walking distance rather than directly inside the busiest blocks.

Where Should Surfers Stay?

Beginner / casual surf trip

Jacó is generally the more practical base. Surf schools and rentals are easy to find, and the town gives you much more infrastructure around the beach.

Experienced surfer

Look seriously at Playa Hermosa.

You sacrifice some walkability and daily convenience, but you're closer to the stronger surf that draws experienced surfers to the area.
